Dust Protection Level Classification
According to the GB/T 4208-2017 standard, dust protection capability is indicated by the first digit of the IP code, which is divided into seven levels from 0 to 6. Only IP5X and IP6X provide substantial dust protection. IP1X prevents the ingress of solid foreign objects with a diameter of 50 mm or greater, IP2X prevents objects with a diameter of 12.5 mm or greater, IP3X prevents objects with a diameter of 2.5 mm or greater, IP4X prevents objects with a diameter of 1.0 mm or greater, IP5X is dust-protected, allowing limited dust ingress that does not interfere with normal operation, and IP6X is dust-tight, completely preventing dust ingress, suitable for harsh dusty environments.
Dust Test Methods
Both IP5X and IP6X tests use standard talcum powder as the test dust, with dry talcum powder having a particle size not exceeding 75 microns, and a dust concentration controlled at 2 to 4 kg/m³. The test duration for both is 8 hours. Before testing, the sample temperature should be stabilized between 15°C and 35°C and above the dew point temperature.
IP5X Dust Test: Place the sample in a sealed test chamber filled with talcum powder, using a fan to keep the dust suspended. The test lasts 8 hours. The evaluation criterion is that the amount of dust entering the enclosure must not affect the function or safety of the equipment; limited dust ingress that does not impair normal operation is permitted. For equipment requiring vacuum, additional tests may be required to verify dust protection performance under negative pressure conditions.
IP6X Dust-Tight Test: Use the same dust and concentration as the IP5X test, with a test duration also of 8 hours. The interior of the enclosure must be maintained under negative pressure to simulate the pressure difference during operation, typically by creating a vacuum of 2 kPa below atmospheric pressure. The evaluation criterion is that no dust deposits are present inside the enclosure.
IP1X to IP4X Tests: For IP1X, use a spherical probe with a diameter of 50 mm and a test force of 50 N; the probe must not enter the enclosure. For IP2X, use a test finger with a diameter of 12.5 mm and a length of 80 mm, with a test force of 10 N or 30 N; the articulated test finger may penetrate up to 80 mm but must not contact hazardous parts. For IP3X, use a rigid steel ball or wire with a diameter of 2.5 mm, with a test force of 3 N; the probe must not enter the enclosure. For IP4X, use a rigid steel wire with a diameter of 1.0 mm and a length of 100 mm, with a test force of 1 N; the probe must not enter the enclosure.
Certification Process
The dust protection level certification for metal products typically includes the following stages:
Preliminary Evaluation and Design: Clarify the product usage environment and determine the target dust protection level (IP5X or IP6X). Optimize the protection scheme at the source, including adopting seamless welding or integrated die-casting enclosures, reducing the number of openings, installing labyrinth ventilation paths or dust screens at necessary openings, and using high-quality silicone sealing rings. Use threaded waterproof connectors with sealing rings for cable entries, and adopt full lamination or membrane designs for buttons and displays to avoid gap dust accumulation.
Application and Document Submission: Select a third-party testing agency with CMA and CNAS qualifications, and submit documents such as the company business license, product manual, enclosure material certificate, sealing structure description, and product drawings. The certification body conducts a preliminary compliance review of the application materials, taking approximately 1 to 3 working days.
Product Sampling and Testing: The laboratory performs tests according to the target level requirements. For IP5X, complete the 8-hour dust test, then inspect internal dust deposition and functional status; for IP6X, complete the 8-hour dust test while maintaining negative pressure conditions, requiring no dust deposition inside after the test. The test cycle typically takes 5 to 7 working days.
Functional Verification and Judgment: During the test, continuously monitor the stability of the operating parameters of the equipment under test. After the test, perform an insulation resistance test requiring a value not less than 2 MΩ. For moving parts, also test indicators such as changes in rotational resistance and sealing performance.
Rectification and Review: If non-conformities are found during testing, the enterprise must analyze the causes (e.g., aging seals, improper weld treatment, structural design flaws), rectify them, and resubmit samples for testing.
Certification Decision and Issuance: After passing all tests, the certification body issues a formal test report, which clearly concludes either "Conforms to GB/T 4208-2017 IP5X dust protection level requirements" or "Conforms to GB/T 4208-2017 IP6X dust-tight level requirements," and stamps it with CMA or CNAS marks. The product nameplate may bear the corresponding IP level marking. The certification report is valid long-term, but recertification is required if the product structure or materials change.
Post-Certification Surveillance (Optional): Some certification bodies offer annual surveillance audit services to confirm that the product continues to meet certification requirements. Enterprises should establish internal quality control mechanisms and regularly inspect seal integrity and aging of sealing components.
