Product carbon footprint management system certification is an authoritative evaluation mechanism for organizations to quantify, report and continuously improve the greenhouse gas emission capacity during the product life cycle. It aims to help organizations accurately grasp the carbon emission level of products, identify emission reduction potential and deal with international green trade barriers through standardized methods. This certification is mainly based on the national standard GB/T 24067-2024, which systematically quantifies and checks the carbon emissions of products in the whole life cycle from raw material acquisition, production, distribution, use and disposal, and finally grants the organization a certification certificate with a validity period of three years.

Certification core content

The certification of product carbon footprint management system focuses on the carbon emission management of the whole product life cycle, with the following dimensions as the core:

Quantitative goal and scope definition: define the purpose of product carbon footprint accounting (such as export needs, brand value enhancement, supply chain access, etc.), determine product functions and functional units, and define system boundaries (geographical scope, time boundaries, life cycle stages, such as "cradle to door" or "cradle to grave").

Life cycle inventory analysis: collect the activity data of the whole life cycle of products, including raw material purchase, energy consumption, transportation distance and mode, production process emission, packaging material consumption, product use stage energy consumption, waste disposal methods, etc.

Life-cycle impact assessment: adopt the internationally accepted life-cycle assessment method and emission factor database to calculate the carbon footprint of the product, which is expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e), covering six greenhouse gases (CO, CH, NO, HFCs, PFCs, SF) and other related gases specified in the Kyoto Protocol.

Interpretation of results and preparation of report: identify the hot links of carbon emission (such as raw material production, energy consumption, transportation, etc.), carry out integrity, consistency and sensitivity analysis, put forward conclusions and suggestions for improvement, and prepare a standardized carbon footprint accounting report.

Data quality management: establish data collection standards, ensure data traceability, give priority to primary activity data, rationally use secondary data, and carry out uncertainty analysis.

Continuous improvement mechanism: according to the carbon footprint accounting results, formulate emission reduction targets and action plans, reduce carbon emissions of products through process optimization, clean energy substitution, supply chain coordination, etc., and realize dynamic optimization.

Certification process

Product carbon footprint management system certification is usually divided into the following stages:

Application and acceptance: submit application materials (business license, product introduction, production flow chart, main raw and auxiliary materials and energy consumption, transportation distance statistics, main measuring instruments ledger, etc.), and the certification body will review the application and confirm that the organization has the basic conditions for certification.

Data collection and modeling: enterprises set up inter-departmental working groups (production, technology, procurement, environmental protection, etc.) to collect product life cycle data and establish a carbon footprint calculation model.

Initial inspection (optional): According to the requirements of China's product carbon footprint certification pilot, the certification body may carry out initial factory inspection to evaluate the enterprise's quality assurance ability and data base.

Document review: Certification bodies review the compliance and scientificity of carbon footprint accounting reports, data sources and calculation methods.

On-site verification: Conduct on-site audit, including personnel interviews, access to original records, verification of energy measuring instruments, and inspection of production process to verify the accuracy and traceability of data.

Rectification and review: for the nonconformities found in the audit, the organization shall complete the rectification within the specified time limit and submit the evidence, which will be reviewed by the audit team.

Certification decision and certification: after the technical review is passed, a certification certificate will be issued to confirm that the carbon footprint of the product meets the standard requirements. The certificate is valid for three years, and carbon labels can be provided according to customer requirements.

Supervision and audit: conduct supervision and audit once a year after obtaining the certificate (the interval is not more than 12 months) to confirm that the carbon footprint of the product is continuously maintained or improved, and ensure that it continuously meets the certification requirements.

Re-certification audit: Re-certification audit is conducted before the certificate expires, and the certification qualification is extended, usually for three years.

Certification value

Coping with international green trade barriers: Help export enterprises meet the policy requirements of EU Carbon Border Regulation Mechanism (CBAM) and EU New Battery Act, and avoid being excluded from the international supply chain because they cannot provide carbon footprint data.

Meet the requirements of supply chain access: respond to the green supply chain requirements of leading enterprises such as Apple and Tesla, as a prerequisite for upstream suppliers to obtain purchase orders, and maintain and expand market share.

Identify emission reduction opportunities and reduce costs and increase efficiency: accurately locate carbon emission hotspots in the product life cycle, optimize production processes (such as lightweight design and clean energy substitution), reduce energy consumption and operating costs, and improve resource utilization efficiency.

Enhance brand image and market competitiveness: demonstrate the environmental performance of products and corporate social responsibility to consumers and investors through third-party certification, meet low-carbon consumption preferences, and stand out among homogenized products.

Supporting carbon trading and green finance: providing a reliable carbon emission data base for participating in the carbon trading market, applying for green credit or issuing green bonds.

Meet policy compliance and obtain government support: it conforms to the carbon-neutral policy orientation of peak carbon dioxide emissions, and obtains financial incentives and policy inclinations from local governments for green manufacturing and low-carbon development.

Enhance the trust of stakeholders: ensure the transparent disclosure of carbon emission data, reduce the risk of data manipulation or misreporting, and safeguard the trust of customers, investors and regulatory agencies.
