Waterproof Rating Classification

According to the GB/T 4208-2017 standard, the waterproof capability is indicated by the second digit of the IP code, which is divided into ten levels from 0 to 9K. The higher the number, the stronger the waterproof capability. IPX1 prevents vertical dripping, IPX2 prevents dripping when tilted up to 15 degrees, IPX3 prevents spraying water, IPX4 prevents splashing water, IPX5 prevents water jets, IPX6 prevents powerful water jets, IPX7 allows temporary immersion (1 meter depth for 30 minutes), IPX8 allows continuous immersion (conditions agreed upon by manufacturer and user, typically greater than 1 meter depth), and IPX9K prevents high-temperature, high-pressure water jets (80°C water, 8 to 10 MPa pressure). Waterproof Rating Test Methods

IPX1 Vertical Drip Test: Using a drip test device to simulate vertical dripping, with a drip rate of 1 mm/min and a test duration of 10 minutes. The sample is placed on a turntable rotating at 1 rpm with an eccentricity of approximately 100 mm. Requirement: No harmful effects from vertical dripping; no water ingress inside.

IPX2 Tilted 15-Degree Drip Test: The enclosure is tilted at 15 degrees, the support platform does not rotate, and it is tested in four directions for 2.5 minutes each, with a total test time of 10 minutes and a drip rate of 3 mm/min. Requirement: No harmful effects from vertical dripping; no water ingress inside.

IPX3 Spray Water Test: Conducted using an oscillating tube or a rain spray nozzle. When using an oscillating tube, the tube swings within 60 degrees on each side of the center point, with a water flow rate of 0.07 L/min multiplied by the number of holes, and a test duration of 10 minutes (rotate the sample 90° after 5 minutes of swinging, then test for another 5 minutes). Requirement: No harmful effects from rain within a 60-degree range from the vertical plane of the enclosure; no water ingress inside.

IPX4 Splash Water Test: Conducted using an oscillating tube or a rain spray nozzle. When using an oscillating tube, the tube swings within 180 degrees on each side of the center point, with a water flow rate of 0.07 L/min multiplied by the number of holes, and a test duration of 10 minutes. Requirement: No harmful effects from splashing within a 180-degree range from the vertical plane of the enclosure; no water ingress inside.

IPX5 Water Jet Test: Using a nozzle with an inner diameter of 6.3 mm, a water flow rate of 12.5 L/min, the sample enclosure is placed 2.5 to 3 meters from the nozzle, with a test duration of 1 minute per square meter, and a total time of no less than 3 minutes. Requirement: No harmful effects from water jets directed at the enclosure from all directions; no water ingress inside.

IPX6 Powerful Water Jet Test: Using a nozzle with an inner diameter of 12.5 mm, a water flow rate of 100 L/min, the sample enclosure is placed 2.5 to 3 meters from the nozzle, with a test duration of 1 minute per square meter, and a total time of no less than 3 minutes. Requirement: No harmful effects from powerful water jets directed at the enclosure from all directions; no water ingress inside.

IPX7 Short-Term Immersion Test: The sample is fully immersed in water at a specified pressure. If the sample height is less than or equal to 850 mm, the immersion depth is such that the bottom of the sample is 1 meter below the water surface; if the sample height exceeds 850 mm, the immersion depth is such that the top of the sample is 150 mm below the water surface. The temperature difference between the water and the sample does not exceed 5 K, and the test duration is 30 minutes. Requirement: The amount of water ingress does not reach a harmful level, and the equipment functions normally.

IPX8 Continuous Immersion Test: Test conditions are determined through negotiation between the manufacturer and the user. The immersion depth and test duration should not be lower than those specified for IPX7 and should consider the requirement for continuous immersion of the enclosure in actual use. Typically, a depth greater than 1 meter and a duration exceeding 30 minutes are required. Requirement: The amount of water ingress does not reach a harmful level.

IPX9K High-Temperature, High-Pressure Water Jet Test: Using 80°C hot water, a flow rate of 15 L/min, and a pressure of 8 to 10 MPa. For small enclosures (maximum dimension not exceeding 250 mm), the sample is installed on a turntable rotating at 5 rpm, with spray angles of 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°, each tested for 30 seconds. For large enclosures, the sample is installed as intended for use, ensuring all external surfaces are sprayed. The distance between the sample and the nozzle is 175 ± 25 mm, with a test duration of 1 minute per square meter. Requirement: No harmful effects from high-temperature, high-pressure water jets directed at the enclosure from all directions; no water ingress inside.

Certification Process

The waterproof rating certification for metal products generally consists of the following stages:

Application and Document Submission: Select a third-party testing institution with CNAS and CMA qualifications, and submit materials such as the business license, product manual, enclosure material certificate, sealing structure description, and product drawings. The certification body conducts a preliminary compliance review of the application materials, taking approximately 1 to 3 working days.

Product Sampling and Inspection: The laboratory performs tests according to the target rating requirements. IPX7 requires completing a 30-minute immersion test at 1 meter depth; IPX8 requires completing an immersion test under agreed conditions (typically 1.5 to 3 meters depth, 30 minutes to 1 hour); IPX5 to IPX6 require completing water jet tests; IPX9K requires completing a high-temperature, high-pressure water jet test. The test cycle is typically 5 to 7 working days, which can be shortened to 3 working days for expedited service.

Functional Verification and Judgment: After the test, check for water ingress inside. Water must not accumulate on insulating parts that could cause tracking due to reduced creepage distance. After the IPX7 test, the equipment must function normally, seals must be intact, and no traces of water ingress inside are allowed. The test sample should be handled gently during movement and inspection, and must not be inverted.

Rectification and Re-inspection: If any non-conformities are identified during testing, the enterprise must analyze the causes (e.g., aging seals, improper weld treatment, structural design defects, etc.), implement corrective actions, and resubmit samples for testing. Complete records and evidence of the rectification process must be retained.

Certification Decision and Issuance: After passing all tests, the certification body issues an official test report. The report clearly states the conclusion as "Complies with GB/T 4208-2017 IPXX waterproof rating requirements" and bears the CNAS or CMA stamp. Products sold domestically use the GB/T 4208 standard and issue a Chinese report; exported products use the IEC 60529 standard and issue an English report. The certification report is valid long-term; if the product structure or materials change, re-certification is required.

Post-Certification Surveillance (Optional): Some certification bodies provide annual surveillance audit services to confirm the product continues to meet certification requirements. Enterprises should establish internal quality control mechanisms and regularly check seal integrity and seal aging conditions.
