Products that meet the requirements are granted a certification certificate with a validity period of five years.

The antibacterial certification for furniture products focuses on the antibacterial performance of furniture and examines the following key dimensions:

Antibacterial Rate: According to the QB/T 4371-2012 standard, antibacterial performance testing is conducted on the surface of furniture products. The test strains mainly include Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 80939), requiring an inhibition rate of no less than 90%. Some certification programs or international standards impose stricter requirements, with inhibition rates needing to be no less than 99% or antibacterial activity values no less than 2.0.

Antibacterial Durability: This assesses the ability of the product to maintain its antibacterial performance after multiple washing, abrasion, or light aging cycles. For hard materials (wood, metal, plastic, glass, leather, etc.), antibacterial rate testing is repeated after 200 abrasion cycles; for textile fabrics, antibacterial rate testing is repeated after five standard washes. The antibacterial rate must still meet the required standards after durability testing.

Antifungal (Mold Resistance) Performance: Some certifications also cover antifungal performance, testing strains such as Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans, requiring an inhibition rate of no less than 85% or a mold resistance grade of Level 0 to Level 1.

Testing Methods

According to the QB/T 4371-2012 standard, evaluation methods are divided into two categories based on furniture material:

Textile Fabric Category (Absorption Method): Applicable to water-absorbent surfaces such as fabric and upholstery. Steps: Inoculate the standard bacterial suspension onto the sample surface; allow the suspension to be fully absorbed by the sample; incubate at 37°C with relative humidity above 90% for 24 hours; elute, count, and calculate the antibacterial rate or antibacterial value.

Hard Surface Category (Film Contact Method): Applicable to surfaces such as panels, painted surfaces, metal, plastic, glass, and leather. Steps: Drop the bacterial suspension onto the sample surface; cover with a sterile polyethylene film to ensure full contact; incubate under the same conditions for 24 hours; elute viable bacteria and count; calculate the antibacterial rate.

Certification Conditions and Requirements

Enterprises and products applying for antibacterial certification for furniture must meet the following basic conditions:

Qualification Requirements: Hold a valid business license issued by the administrative department for industry and commerce, with independent legal entity status.

Product Compliance Requirements: The product applying for certification must have a test report that meets product quality standards, and the product performance must meet relevant national standards.

Antibacterial Performance Requirements: According to the QB/T 4371-2012 standard, the inhibition rate for Staphylococcus aureus must be no less than 90%, and the inhibition rate for Escherichia coli must be no less than 90%.

Sample Requirements: Cut from the antibacterial surface layer of the finished furniture, with dimensions of 50 mm × 50 mm. At least three parallel samples are required, with one or two spare samples. Samples must be preconditioned in an environment of 23°C ± 2°C and relative humidity of 50% ± 5% for 24 hours.

Conditioning: Blank control samples must be of the same material without antibacterial treatment, used to calculate the antibacterial rate.

Certification Process

The antibacterial certification for furniture products typically includes the following stages:

Certification Application: Submit the application form, business license, product manual (including material composition and antibacterial process description), product test reports, and other documents. The applicant must specify the certification scope and selected certification mode.

Document Review: The certification body reviews the application documents to confirm compliance with the QB/T 4371-2012 standard.

Product Sampling Inspection: The certification body conducts sampling or accepts existing qualified test reports. Samples are sent to a laboratory with CMA and CNAS qualifications for testing. Test items include the inhibition rates for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, antibacterial durability, and other indicators. In antibacterial durability testing, hard materials undergo 200 abrasion cycles, and textile fabrics undergo five wash cycles.

Rectification and Re-review: For non-conformities identified during the audit, the enterprise must complete rectification within the specified period and submit evidence for review by the audit team.
