The Furniture Fire and Flame Retardant Quality Grade Certification focuses on the burning behavior of furniture products, with core assessments in the following dimensions:

• Flame Retardant Grade Classification Testing: Depending on the intended use location of the product, flame retardant performance tests are conducted using different ignition sources. Grade I applies to general households, requiring passing the cigarette ignition source test (no smoldering or flaming combustion within 60 minutes after the cigarette extinguishes). Grade II applies to ordinary public places excluding elderly care facilities, public entertainment venues, and hospital wards, requiring passing the simulated match flame test (sustained combustion for no more than 2 minutes after ignition source removal, flame spread length ≤100mm, and no smoldering within 15 minutes). Grade III applies to specific public places such as nursing homes, hospital wards, and public entertainment venues, requiring passing the small wood crib test (sustained combustion for no more than 10 minutes after ignition of the wood crib, and no ignition phenomenon within 60 minutes).
• Key Indicators of Burning Behavior: According to the GB 20286-2006 standard, indicators such as peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR) within a specified time, and maximum smoke density are tested. Basic Requirements for Certification

Enterprises and products applying for the Furniture Fire and Flame Retardant Quality Grade Certification must meet the following basic conditions:

• Qualification Requirements: Hold a valid business license issued by the administrative department for industry and commerce, possessing independent legal person status.
• Management System Requirements: The manufacturing enterprise shall establish and operate a quality management system. Enterprises opting for Certification Mode 1 need to possess valid certification certificates for Quality Management System (QMS), Environmental Management System (EMS), and Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
• Product Compliance Requirements: The product applying for certification should have a test report conforming to product quality standards, and its performance should meet relevant national standard requirements.
• Flame Retardant Performance Requirements: Grade I products must pass the cigarette ignition source test. Grade II products must pass the simulated match flame test. Grade III products must pass the small wood crib test.

Certification Process

The Furniture Fire and Flame Retardant Quality Grade Certification adopts a certification model consisting of product testing, initial factory inspection, and post-certification surveillance. Certification bodies typically offer two certification modes for enterprises to choose from:

• Certification Mode 1 (Product Testing + Post-certification Surveillance): Does not require an on-site factory inspection, but prerequisite is that the manufacturing enterprise has already passed QMS, EMS, and OHSMS certification, and the certificates are valid.
• Certification Mode 2 (Initial Factory Inspection + Product Testing + Post-certification Surveillance): Requires an on-site inspection of the factory's assurance capabilities. Applicable to enterprises that have not yet obtained the three-system certifications or wish to comprehensively demonstrate their production capabilities.

The basic certification process includes:

• Certification Application: Submit application documents including the application form, business license, product technical documents (design drawings, production process flow, raw material list), product quality control documents (test reports, conformity certificates), product samples, etc. The applicant must specify the chosen certification mode and the applied certification grade.
• Product Sampling and Testing: Sampling is conducted by the certification body or existing qualified test reports are accepted. Samples are sent to laboratories with CMA/CNAS accreditation for testing. Test items include cigarette ignition test, simulated match flame test, small wood crib test (depending on the applied grade), heat release rate, total heat release, smoke density, toxic gas emissions, flame retardant content, etc. If no acceptable quality inspection report is available, product sampling and testing are required.
• Initial Factory Inspection (Applicable to Mode 2): The inspection team conducts an initial factory inspection of the applicant, including review of production facilities, assessment of the quality control system, examination of documents and records, etc., to verify compliance of the enterprise's production and management processes with certification requirements.
• Certification Result Evaluation and Approval: The certification body comprehensively evaluates the product test and factory inspection results. Upon passing the evaluation, a certification certificate is issued, valid for five years.
• Post-certification Surveillance: An annual surveillance inspection should be arranged within 12 months after the initial factory inspection, with intervals not exceeding 12 months for each subsequent annual surveillance, ensuring continued compliance with certification requirements.
• Re-certification: Submit a re-certification application before the certificate expires. The re-certification procedure follows the requirements of a new application.
